Facts about opencast-mining landscape

Only 15 years ago 20 open-cast coalmines produced about 150 million tons of lignite which were refined in numerous powerstations, briquette factories and carbonizing plants. The so-called „Straße der Braunkohle“ combines historical places of lignite production and refinement. Come with us on an excursion to 100 witnesses of the mining past. Gigantic large-scale mining equipment can be admired in the still active United Schleenhain mine, in Ferropolis – “City of iron” at Lake Gremmin or in the Mining Machinery Park at Lake Störmthal.

Divers from all over Germany are fascinated by the immense depth of the lakes and the ground structure. Excellent wind conditions are best for learning and practising sailing and surfing. Explore the exciting nature

Over decades large parts of the exhausted coalmines were left to natural succession which consequently created a variety of wet and dry biotopes. So a great number of threatened species of plants and animals like orchids and amphibians made it their home. But also the remains of the old cultivated landscape with its remarkable river meadow structure, which winds even through the centre of the big city of Leipzig, gives shelter to rare species. Specific expert excursions and adventure programs show you rarities and curiosities.

Lively cultural history

Although historical places in Leipzig New Lakeland have been devastated there is still a remarkable density of historico-cultural witnesses in the region. In Markkleeberg there is the earliest prehistoric find of Saxony dating back 280.000 years. Closely related to the name of Wiprecht of Groitzsch (1050 - 1124) is the establishment of many settlements in the region. The outstanding position of Leipzig New Lakeland at the crossing of the European trade and military roads via regia and via imperii made it the scene of important historic events. The wellknown military action in this region is the Battle of the Nations of Leipzig in 1813 which was the beginning of Napoleon´s defeat– every year in October a touristic asset.

Leipzig New Lakeland is growing steadily

Almost no other tourist region shows a comparable building and planning activity. And the most important project is the system of connected lakes and waterways which links the lakes step by step with Leipzig by means of navigatable canals. The first part – the connection Leipzig - Cospudener See – is already intact. Leipzig New Lakeland is full of further ideas: the swimming art project „Vineta“, archeological and botanical adventure exhibitions – we are pleased to inform you about realised and planned projects. One thing is certain: It pays to come again – because Leipzig New Lakeland is growing.

Leipzig has many faces. In particular the historical town centre with the sights lying closely together like the Thomaskirche, Nikolaikirche, Hauptbahnhof (main railway station), Altes und Neues Rathaus (Old and new townhall), Gewandhaus and Opera house leave a deep impression. Dive into the history from Bach until the peaceful revolution in 1989 or enjoy the present in the gastronomy lane „Drallewatsch“ or in the Leipzig zoo.
